Hilton Als + Robin Coste Lewis
Writer and critic Hilton Als will read from his ongoing body of work that investigates various narratives of race and gender. The reading will be followed by a conversation between Als and poet Robin Coste Lewis.
Hilton Als became a staff writer at The New Yorker in 1994 and a theatre critic in 2002. He is an associate professor of writing at Columbia University’s School of the Arts and has taught at Yale University, Wesleyan, and Smith College. His most recent book, White Girls, was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and the winner of the Lambda Literary Award in 2014. He won the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism in 2017.
Robin Coste Lewis is the Poet Laureate of the City of Los Angeles. An essayist and poet, her debut poetry collection, Voyage of the Sable Venus (Knopf, 2015), won the National Book Award for Poetry—the first poetry debut to win the award since 1974. Lewis earned her MFA from New York University’s creative writing program, where she was a Goldwater Fellow in poetry. She also earned a MTS degree in Sanskrit and comparative religious literature from The Divinity School at Harvard University, and a PhD from the creative writing and literature program at the University of Southern California, where she was a Provost Fellow in poetry and visual studies. Lewis has taught on the faculty of Wheaton College, Hunter College, and Hampshire College. Currently, she teaches in NYU’s low-residency MFA in Paris, and is a writer-in-residence at USC. Born in Compton, she now lives in Los Angeles. Her family is from New Orleans.
